Press Release:

Beyond Genesis: Joseph

Etchings by Dov Talpaz & Poetry by ERES

Opening Reception: March 15, 2025, 6-9 PM

On view March 15 – March 22, 2025

This exhibition emerges from a shared artistic exploration of poet ERES and artist Dov Talpaz. Their collaboration, a vibrant dialogue between poetry and etching, offers a fresh perspective on themes of resilience, forgiveness, and the human capacity for transformation.

The project's foundation lies in extensive conversations and exchanges, a continuous interplay where words inspired images and images, in turn, sparked new poetic expressions. In this mythological story, the conversion between the divine and Joseph is communicated through dreams. The journey is very personal as the story follows the main character’s growth from childhood to adulthood, exposing an intimate and relatable view. There are two processes that are met in this tale: a movement from ego to transcendence of the self, as well as the movement from origin to displacement and migration. Both ERES and Talpaz, while born in the U.S., grew up in Mexico and Israel, and arrived in New York City as adults. Similarly to Joseph, they had to culturally adapt and find their place and inspiration from their own heritage. Talpaz shares: “A painting, drawing, or an etching of a place, a certain memory of a landscape, is a way to connect to the past or to one’s roots.”

The exhibition presents 15 etchings alongside 12 corresponding poems created between 2023 and 2024. The idea of working with this story came from realizing that there were many untold moments in the intervals between the words. These moments were an opportunity to retell and reimagine. As the project progressed the discourse transitioned from the technical aspects of Joseph's life to the existential and collective meaning of his personal journey.

As stated by ERES: “Poetry is a way to dig into the emotional heart of a story, while Dov’s etchings capture its atmosphere and texture. Together, we were able to explore Joseph’s journey in ways we couldn’t have done alone.” One of the project’s core goals is to offer the audience a space for healing. A story is one of reconciliation—with family, with identity, and with the self—this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on their own paths to healing.

The Sound of Longing / solo exhibition at SARAHCROWN, Tribeca, NYC, Oct 20 - Nov 25, 2023

SARAHCROWN is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by American artist Dov Talpaz: The Sound of Longing. The exhibition will take place between October 20 and November 25, 2023 at SARAHCROWN New York’s Tribeca location, with an opening reception taking place on October 20, 6-8PM.

In The Sound of Longing, Talpaz proposes a brand new series of works that revolve around the feeling of longing. Longing intended as a testament to our capacity to feel deeply and to imagine beyond the present. In these new works, longing is never expressed literally. Rather, through an extraordinary combination of facial expressions, color combinations, vast empty areas, and scenes of people engaging in communal activities.

Talpaz draws his inspiration both from the wealth of expressionist and impressionist painters who have preceded him as well as from film and literature, having named Rosemarie Beck, film directors Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujirō Ozo, and Paul Cézanne as primary influences. Through all of these combined influences, Talpaz has developed a visual language of simple composition, bold use of color and contrast, combined with a masterful technical execution, aimed towards producing stories and vignettes of longing. In her essay accompanying the catalog for this exhibition, Jennifer Samet writes:

I see his paintings as entwined with a search for personal betterment: a humanist quest.  Over the past several years, Talpaz has focused on simplifying his compositions, using colored paper and latex collage as a tool in this process. It is not reductive; he is searching for essentials: deep meanings in complex stories, human connection and love… These simplifications and abstractions…  connect to the paintings of Henri Matisse from the 1910s, in which views beyond the window are suggested by simplified geometric angles of light – the spaces of desire and longing…  In his depictions of Mizoguchi’s films, the sense of longing comes from the enclosed rooms with glimpses of the world beyond.

As you embark on this visual journey, allow yourself to be carried away by the art, let your senses resonate with the emotions conveyed, and find solace, inspiration, and a profound connection to the shared human longing for something just beyond our grasp. "The Sound of Longing" is not just an exhibition of artworks; it is an exploration of the human spirit, an invitation to reflect upon the desires that shape our existence, and a testament to the enduring power of art to articulate the unspoken.

The exhibition will open to the public on October 20, from 6-8PM.  For more information or to make an appointment please contact: info@sarahcrown.com |  www.sarahcrown.com.
